Custom Brisa Trapper Kit in Elmax and Ivory Micarta
Adam P from NSW have put together a custom Brisa EnZo Trapper Kit and sharing his steps on the process;
A new knife for field work.
The Enzo Trapper 95, flat grind in the ELMAX steel (RC 62) offered all the features I was looking for. Good size, awesome steel and well finished grind. Creative man was able to supply the knife blank, some Ivory Micarta scales, Corby Bolts and lanyard tube for assembly.
Assembly started with taping the blade and cutting off where the scales started. Cutting edge made safe, then removing the red liners from the Micarta so it was pure Ivory finish, trimming the Corby bolts back to suit the reduced width of the handle, drilling the lanyard holes in the scales, fitting and trimming the lanyard tube. This took a couple of hours which would have been much less if I took the basic kit.
Mixed up some 24hr Araldite, applied and then assembled the scales, lanyard tube and some on the Corby bolts before snugging it all up tight (with clamps on each end) to give a gapless finish. Put it under the heater to keep it warm for curing.
After more than a day, out with the files to bring the Corby bolts and lanyard tube down to size, then 240 grit paper to bring the scales down to match the blank. Finished with different grades up to 1200 grit for a bright surface. Deburred the lanyard tube and a small chamfer on the ID to stop lanyard chafing.
Lanyard made from dayglo orange Paracord with two lanyard knots.
Assembling the basic kit is nothing a normal person couldn’t do with easily available hand tools. My knife was a little harder, but those were my choices to get the knife I wanted.
Resulting knife is wicked sharp, very much just the right length for processing deer in the field. Kydex sheath is perfect for field use and the whole package is exactly what I was looking for. Two deer processed for a carry out on Monday afternoon and the edge is still shaving sharp, a quick wash to clean and once dry back into the sheath for the next deer.
Cheers,
Adam
